External respiration refers to the exchange of gases between the atmosphere and blood, while internal respiration involves the exchange of gases between blood and body cells. This system ensures the supply of oxygen to the cells and the removal of carbon dioxide, enabling cellular metabolism and maintaining the body’s homeostasis.

The respiratory system is intimately related to achieving homeostasis in the human body.
