Health Information Exchange (HIE) is a technology that allows the electronic sharing of patients’ clinical and administrative data between healthcare organizations within an area, community, and worldwide between different systems (Sadoughi & Ahmadi, 2018). Health Information Exchange is critical in providing timely access to a complete collection of patient data which can vastly improve coordination of medical care and medical decision-making. This, in turn, allows the delivery of better healthcare outcomes, promotes patient safety with fewer readmissions and emergency room visits, and drives down healthcare costs (Sadoughi & Ahmadi, 2018).

As a Utilization Management Nurse for a managed care company, HIE is essential to ensure that the care provided to our members is necessary and timely. JIVA is a platform that our company uses to achieve this. The Utilization Management features in JIVA offer insights and tools to help guide healthcare service use and effectiveness. Users can determine the necessity and appropriateness of care and examine requests, procedures, and treatments (ZeOmega, 2021).

Interactions with data and technology specialists

Our data and technology specialists are tasked with ensuring that the JIVA system works smoothly daily. They are our point of contact for any issues with the system. They train clinicians when software upgrades are rolled out, and they send out emails to request feedback on opportunities for process improvement.

Strategy to improve interactions

One strategy that our company should employ to improve interactions is to bring in a Nurse Informaticist who will work for hand in hand with our data and technology specialists. Our data and technology specialists are IT professionals. Since they are non-clinical staff, any clinical questions that arise during training must be redirected to the nurse managers. Having a nurse informaticist on board will decrease information hand-off and allow speedy resolution for any clinical staff issues with the JIVA system.

Impact of the continuing evolution of nurse informatics

As health care evolves, professionals must be well equipped to make meaningful contributions through the use of relevant and timely information (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). Over the last five decades, the breadth of nursing informatics practice has expanded to meet healthcare organizations’ needs and keep pace with technological advancements (Nagle, Sermeus, & Junger, 2017). Nursing informatics (NI) embraces the best practices and encourages evidence-based approaches (EBP). As a result, it promotes patient safety, quality, and cost savings. NI facilitates information sharing, which has improved decision-making abilities and beneficial outcomes for healthcare team members (Jouparinejad et al., 2020).
