The cost of capital, capital budgeting, and working capital management are important concepts for the manager to understand and apply effectively. But, as we ask each week, do these concepts align with scripture?

Background Information

We all have the opportunity to influence our colleagues in the workplace regardless of our position in the organization. There are many ways that can happen. One is to perform our tasks with excellence. Another is to apply biblical principles to the way we do our work or interact with others. This can often be as a silent witness if the environment doesn’t allow us to openly share our faith.  

1 Chronicles 28 is a passage of scripture that can guide our work and career. On the surface, one might not think of 1 Chronicles as that kind of book, but it is. David is passing the mantle of leadership to Solomon. The passage ends with David saying to Solomon, “Be strong and do the work” (1 Chronicles 28:10, New International Version). What precedes this verse is what is most important.

The first thing that David says to Solomon is be sure your heart is right with God. David says these words in verse 9: “And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts.” Following that verse is a section that discusses the kind of detailed planning that must occur before action is taken. The sequence of this chapter is important. First, God is concerned about the condition of our heart. Second, careful and detailed planning is important. Third, we must do the work we are called to do. If we approach our work in this manner, we can and will influence the people and organizations we serve.

Is the truth found in this chapter relevant to capital budgeting? Is capital budgeting consistent with biblical principles?

3. Read 1 Chronicles 28 in your Bible.
4. Navigate to the discussion thread and answer these questions:  
   1. Is the truth found in this chapter relevant to capital budgeting?
   2. Is capital budgeting consistent with biblical principles?
5. Your initial post is due by the end of the fourth day of the workshop.
6. Read and respond to one of your classmates’ postings, as well as any follow-up instructor questions directed to you, by the end of the workshop.
7. Use headings to organize your answers so that it is clear to which question(s) you are replying and to facilitate your classmates’ responses and any questions from your instructor.
8. Your postings should also:
   1. Be well developed by providing clear answers with evidence of critical thinking.
   2. Add greater depth to the discussion by introducing new ideas.
   3. Provide clarification to classmates’ questions and provide insight into the discussion.
